My name is U-Kelly. I was born in Sierra Leone West Africa in a small village call Gbanbatok. I flee to The Netherlands to seek political asylum after the 12 years of bloody war. Nine (9) years in the Netherland I have finished my MBO Level 4 in Information & Communication Technology. All these years I have been taking singing and guitar lessen so that I should know how to compose my own songs. Music has been my best friend in the journey of this beautiful life.
When I was a boy I asked my beloved mother to buy a Bob Marley guitar for me but due to difficulties my mum can’t afford it for me. Today in my adventure I can play, write and sing my own songs. As a singer songwriter in the category Reggae pop, Reggae R&B, Hip Hop and Gospel, my background as African has been an influence to musical sound. I have taking this dream that was in my mind since I was a boy to spread the message of peace and love through my music.
As a singer songwriter, in 2002 I was asked to join a Project called STIL to work
with various artists from different background and cultures. After this successful
work a reggae singer from Sierra Leone base in Groningen asked to join force together
so that we can work on his project. The Cd No More War by Jonas Williams, the pioneer
behind the band Earthian Root, was a success. In 2005 with one of the multi-talented
friend of mine who have inspired me in many different ways in music, Bolivar M’vulu
released his album Crisis in 2007. Out of this album in which we collaborated on
a song called Believe (a Gospel and hip hop song), doors to start my own project
were opened.
In 2008 I joined a competition in our region Flevoland, I was one
of the semi-finalists in the competition. I have learnt a lot of things as an artist
which have helped me to grow. In 2009 I also joined a Gospel competition in The Netherlands
(GrootNieuwsRadio) as one of the competitor I made it to the semi-final with my song
Praise His Name a Gospel and Reggae song.
